Lab 1

The source of this map is http://commons.wikimedia.org. This map represents a metro system. Different lines are shown in different colors. There is also a legend that specifies which line is represented by which color. Stops are represented by tick marks that jut out from the metro lines. I think it is interesting how the metro lines are connected by white shapes with black outlines. I am unsure what the difference is between the circle shape and the dumbell shape. Also, there is no north arrow or scale bar in this map.

The source of this map is www.map-of-spain.co.uk. This map portrays an area over some European countries, with a focus on Spain. Contiguous countries are separated by red borders. There is an inset map of the Canary Islands. There is no north arrow or scale bar. I find it interesting that there is also no legend, so it is hard to discern what the yellow lines running through the countries are. The points seem to be cities and the stars represent capital cities. I think it is also interesting that there is an inset map of the Canary Islands but no inset map to show where Spain and its surrounding countries are located generally in Europe.

The source of this map is www.mapsofworld.com. This map shows all the countries of the world. No two adjacent countries are represented by the same color. Some of the names of the oceans are labeled. The Indian Ocean is not labeled but the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean are both labeled as 'North' and 'South.' There is also a north arrow and a scale bar. I think that this map is interesting because it shows the international date line on the right side. This map is also interesting because the lines of latitude and longitude are curved but I do not think that the countries follow the same projection.

  1. why would you say that the projection of the continents is not in line with the lines of longitude? It's true that maps have to distort features on the earth because it's 3D features on a flat surface. Also you need to give more information about the metro map. Where is it? Is it a real or imaginary map? etc.
